Recently, UL Solutions, a global expert in safety science, awarded Jiangsu Worldight New Material (hereinafter referred to as "Worldlight New Materials") a UL 746C-based outdoor weather resistance certification for its photovoltaic module frame composite material WL-303.

This composite material is manufactured via pultrusion using continuous glass fibers and polyurethane. One side of the material is coated with a polyurethane layer, giving it excellent performance. It represents an ideal replacement for aluminum alloy frames used in photovoltaic modules, helping PV module manufacturers reduce costs and improve efficiency. During the pultrusion process of continuous-fiber-reinforced polyurethane composites, a greater amount of reinforcing fibers can be utilized, significantly enhancing the strength of the final product. Moreover, the resin and fibers complement each other effectively in terms of performance characteristics. Consequently, fiber-reinforced materials produced using polyurethane resin as the matrix and the pultrusion process exhibit the following properties and features: lightweight yet high-strength, excellent corrosion resistance, good dimensional stability, and high design flexibility. The recent UL Solutions testing—covering outdoor weathering resistance, UV resistance, and immersion tests—has further confirmed another crucial attribute of this product: its suitability for use as a frame material in photovoltaic modules.

UV and immersion tests

According to standard UL 746C, "Polymeric Materials—Use in Electrical Equipment Evaluations," the mechanical and flame-retardant properties of materials are assessed after exposure to ultraviolet aging and water immersion, to determine whether they are suitable for outdoor applications. The outdoor suitability of a material is influenced by both its color and thickness.
The content to be tested and the conditions that must be met are as follows:

Weather-resistant materials suitable for outdoor use typically have two common suffixes appended to the product model name:

(f1) indicates that the material has passed all tests in the outdoor usage evaluation.

(f2) indicates that the material has passed either the UV resistance test or the water immersion test only; the acceptability of the results must be evaluated specifically based on the intended end-use environment of the final product.
